Some settings files are used by associated applications developed to manage data transmissions and firmware updates of hardware components and other supported devices connected to the computer. Hewlett-Packard developed the CVA format for files used by the HP Systems Software Manager application, and this software provides users with automatic and manual features for updating firmware software or driver applications of connected devices. Support for different languages integrated into a compatible device is also updated by the HP Systems Software Manager program. The content stored in these CVA files is mostly details of the version update among other pieces of information. Code is also implemented into these CVA files that can be executed to initialize the setup program for the update corresponding to the CVA file. These CVA files are stored and packaged as "SoftPack" updates distributed by HP.

HP Systems Software Manager [SSM] is a free systems solution that automatically updates and detects device drivers, management agent versions and BIOS on your networked computers. Its benefits and functions cover optimization of your PC’s performance, simplifying the complexity of HP System Software for PC management, streamline mass deployment of updates for HP System Software, reduction of total ownership costs, provision of consistent and stable key features for your PC environment, simultaneous automatic installation of HP System Software’s latest releases to various PCs, automatic detection of out-of-date HP System Software and BIOS and hardware, remote updates that can take place in unattended or silent mode so you can do other tasks and summary report for management and tracking purposes. HP SSM supports the unattended installation and/or upgrade of system agents, drivers and ROM system simultaneously on several computers from a central file store without implementation of an infrastructure for software distribution. HP SSM 2.1 adds support for Windows 7.0. It updates integration of SSM to support HPQFlash BIOS Update Utility. HP SSM is launching HPQFlash including management of secure passing of password credentials when it comes across SoftPaqs built with HPQFlash as installation mechanism. It also provides additional support for return conditions that are custom-defined from SoftPaqs. It now recognizes the ReturnCode section of CVA document defining unique management for application-specific values of return code. These changes will help administrators to determine if HP SSM has successfully installed a SoftPaq, or get detailed information if it fails.

a word of warning

Be careful not to rename the extension on .cva files, or any other files. This will not change the file type. Only special conversion software can change a file from one file type to another.

what is a file extension?

A file extension is the set of three or four characters at the end of a filename; in this case, .cva. File extensions tell you what type of file it is, and tell Windows what programs can open it. Windows often associates a default program to each file extension, so that when you double-click the file, the program launches automatically. When that program is no longer on your PC, you can sometimes get an error when you try to open the associated file.
